The HUB: a safe place in Maple Ridge
“The light in someone’s face when you remember their name is so incredible.”
Your generosity helps people take the next step toward recovery and belonging.
A Vital Resource for the Community
Late last year, Coast Mental Health took over running The HUB in Maple Ridge, a critical frontline resource for people facing homelessness and poverty. Because of your support, outreach at The HUB is helping people in their toughest moments.
“Every single day we see anywhere from 40 to 155 people coming to The HUB, including a number of regulars. Many are facing homelessness and poverty. Some people are housed, but they can only afford housing as their bare minimum, and then after that they can’t afford food, they can’t afford clothes,” explains Casey Andrew, Program Manager.
Meeting Basic Needs with Dignity
“At the HUB, we offer a hot meal, clothing donations, hot showers and a bathroom. Our outreach team can help connect folks to the help they need,” explains Casey.
Because of you, outreach workers can refer people to housing supports, healthcare, detox and recovery programs, income assistance, and more.
“We have outreach workers here every day, including an Indigenous Liaison and a specific youth outreach team. So, we can support with emergency housing, eviction prevention, emergency food, emergency clothing, that type of thing,” Casey shares.
Building Trust and Community
The HUB is more than a resource—it’s a place where people feel safe and supported as they work toward recovery.
“Recently we had somebody I’ve known for three years come forward to me and say, hey, like I’m really ready for treatment. I coordinated with their case workers, and they went into treatment for substance use yesterday. That’s a huge win!” says Casey.
Moments of connection matter too. “But honestly, the light in someone’s face when you remember their name is so incredible. There is so much stigma,” Casey adds.
The Community’s Role in Making a Difference
The HUB has become a gathering place for the wider community. Every day, individuals drop off bags of clothing donations to support their neighbours.
“I think The HUB does a fabulous job of supporting people to re-integrate and be accepted by their community, as well as breaking down stigmas some community members might have about their neighbours,” Casey shares.
