Governance

Governance Committee

The role of the Governance Committee is to advise and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on processes and procedures which will improve the quality of the Board’s governance of the Coast Foundation Society, including the means of involvement of all those currently and potentially receiving services, employees, and other stakeholders.

The Governance Committee focused on two key areas this year.  The first area was monitoring implementation of the Strategic Plan developed last year.  The committee worked with Coast management to develop a quarterly reporting process and associated scorecard that will be used to advise the Board of Directors of progress against the Strategic Plan.

This year the Committee also initiated a review of the Board of Directors composition, recruitment, and structure.  Through this review the committee plans to optimize several key aspects of Coast governance.  Specific focus areas include:

  • Board processes for gaining input from Coast clients and members
  • Ensuring we are making effective use of the valuable time contributed by our volunteer board members,
  • Analyzing the ideal Board structure and makeup in order to assisting the Nominations Committee in their ongoing recruitment of qualified Board members

Other Governance Committee accomplishments over the last year include:

  • Facilitation of the annual Open Spaces forum, a key channel used by the Board to collect input from Coast clients and members.
  • Completion of the annual Board Self-Assessment Survey
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of the Board policies;
  • Ongoing development of an orientation/training plan for Board members;
  • Facilitation of communications between the three Coast Boards.

Key focus areas for the committee over the next year will be continued monitoring of the implementation of the Strategic Plan and further review of Board of Directors composition, recruitment, and structure.

The 2008/2009 year was again an exciting time for Coast. We would like to thank Committee members for their very important contributions.
